I had no idea but apparently spielberg took an interest in the series and Dreamworks acquired a license for a 3D live action movie.

It's interesting to see how japanimation adaptation is quickly becoming another hollywood fad...

yea i read about this a bit ago.  I dont have such strong feelings over the original material to feel so torn over it being made into a Hollywood production, but honestly it seems redundant to do a film of this now.  It would be like doing a film adaption of Neuromancer in this day and age when the themes have already become pastiche, yet at its inception was highly relevant.

The only way I can see this being worthy of production is if they brought in some of the themes from SAC, but I doubt that will happen.  And this is Spielberg, so can't really expect anything that isnt overly simplified...

More like American Fad. :\ I was reading up on this one a few days ago and quickly lost interest: Variety. I'm neither here nor there on this. It's just another movie I'll probably watch and enjoy for the simple reason that I'm easily entertained.

Hmmm...overall I'm really hesitant toward the idea of japanimation and manga being turned into live-action (American) movies. Anyone have any examples of it being done well?

Well there was that Live-Action Totoro a few years ago that was all sorts of awkward. . .

And Speedracer. ROFL. But in all honesty, I don't think there have been any previous attempts before this year. . . I remember them always talking about a Live-Action DBZ (which one person during the discussion thought should include Tom Cruise), but I think short of that, Live-Action animes were something Japan did, not the US.

...for what its worth, even Japan's efforts at translating anime to live-action have been anything but impressive.  You know...for that matter I dont really think there have been any films that are worth a damn that have been adapted from a different medium minus conventional fiction or stage productions.....

OMG there was a live action TOTORO??? >.>;;

I'm definitely not a general fan of live actions, probably because I went into so many with incredibly high hopes and just had them dashed to the ground. NANA was one I think, my roommate and I in college were getting soo excited about the trailer and Mika Nakashima for the first movie, then we had a group watching and after I got over the "everyone's so well cast!" excitement I became generally underwhelmed. Then I fell asleep halfway through so I haven't finished the film to this date. Although, I feel like that might be an example of a live action film that's done decently. I think the overall group consensus after the movie (from those who did not fall asleep) was that it wasn't amazing, but it was ok.

Nodame Cantabile live action was hawesomes though so there's one exception to the rule I can give you. It's not just because I'm a Nodame fangirl either, although that definitely helped - the two night special was just great, I watched it and was like I NEED MOAR NODAME EUROPEAN GOODNESS NOW!!!

I work at a nationally distributed magazine. We've DEFINITELY felt it. I've lost many close coworkers in the last month or so.
