Any special plans? x]
Sigh I think I whittled the romantic-ness out of my boyfriend... and he's a five-hour bus ride away. I don't think we'll end up doing anything special this weekend either, which I don't mind horribly, BUT... haha. I think I'll buy some chocolate for myself on my way home. That somehow feels a little sad to me. Maybe it's 'cause I saw a co-worker go by with a huuuge vase of roses xD I've also been indulging in an IM conversation with my sister at work about her spoils/crushes and that's been pretty hilarious... but apart from that looks like this is just going to be another holiday that I "forget" until the last night, when I was like hum should've made a wall for it [geek].

dont remind me it sucks too complicated to tell but I just want it to be over already
in all honesty, i didnt even know it was valentines day until i got to campus and saw all this shit going on nor do i really care. just another holiday to me aimed at creating markets to sell goods to stupid masses. though really, i dont see why people feel the need to feel shitty over this day. doesnt the whole aspect of having a specific point in time designated to be romantic feel really fucking artificial?
but for an interesting note, saw this on ellis's blog today:
"Happy Valentine’s Day to all. And to those who hate the day, I say this: Valentine’s Day is a Christian corruption of a pagan festival involving werewolves, blood and fucking. So wish people a happy Horny Werewolf Day and see what happens."

its a stupid holiday theres no point to it, all they did was make a day where people buy things, first it only worked for couples so now they add friendship too and so they drag more people in, I dont celebrate it and whats bothering me is not the day but something else that might come with this day but anyway I agree crap its retarded to be romantic on a certain day because its whats expected
Psh, you guys are totally overanalyzing. I was talking to various co-workers and most people (with or without significant others) are just using it as an excuse to go out and have a good time, in most cases with friends. Nothing wrong with that :p You could say the same thing for Christmas.
And I'm far too lazy to go through the wiki entry for Valentine's Day
's_Day but as far as I read I didn't see anything about werewolves D: The closest thing I saw was mentioning of February 15 in ancient Rome being Lupercalia. "The word Lupercalia comes from lupus, or wolf, so the holiday may be connected with the legendary wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus. Priests of this cult, luperci would travel to the lupercal, the cave where the she-wolf who reared Romulus and Remus allegedly lived, and sacrifice animals (two goats and a dog). The blood would then be scattered in the streets, to bring fertility and keep the wolves away from the fields."

Side note: Looks like that's where JK Rowling got the name for Remus Lupin... ;)
Dang it, sorry, that was me.
Happy Horny Werewolf Day bitches!
...I did the roses and chocolate thing because I'm po' ...although a fancy night out is probably happening this weekend.
I'm just as cynical and tired of the whole Valentines bullshit as the next guy, and sure I felt like a sucker standing in line waiting to purchase my cliche redundant gifts, but I suppose I'm too old to care. If it makes her happy and I can show a little more affection than usual then whats the harm? I like to let life's little gay moments and sickeningly commercial holidays take me where they may.
incidentally Kalico was in NY for Christmas and I had a ball being alone getting drunk and molesting my cats. I'm easy.

YEAH REMUS! ; D;
V-Day can seem like a crap deal, but I was just thinking of this great NYTimes article I was reading about how romantic love can be sustained many years into a long relationship if you inject bits of "new" things. It doesn't have to be anything big like, you don't have to climb Mt. Everest or quit your job a la midlife crisis style, but just little things like go to a new restaurant you both like and things like that. Since the average guy isn't prone to giving out roses/chocolates on any regular day of the week, I think stuff like that will only help the relationship along :3
...as you said Evol if it makes her happy that's the most important thing mwa ha ha XD
The 'fore-mentioned article -
Maybe it was because yesterday was V-Day but quite a lot of romance-related articles were on the most-emailed list. I really liked this one as well, made me crack up:
"I Love You, But You Love Meat" -

I cooked Lime Tri-tip and homemade mashed potatoes with garlic bread (I was proud of it in case you can't tell :D) for Derek and our friend Eric and his girlfriend. After, Derek and I went to see Jumper, then came home and crashed.
Dinner with them is a bit of a tradition, but aside from making Valentines for the Kinder and First graders at the school I work for, we don't do much. Although, I agree with Eva on adding flavour to the life of the relationship. Not that Derek and I only do it on Valentine's, but I enjoy that the other people I know are doing things too, so we can do something together without having to plan a big date.

I took a leaf out of Gid's book for yesterday's dinner, did a little splurge for tablecloth, candle, lighter (lol) and then cooked up a smashing dinner for my boyfriend consisting of miso soup, pineapple fried rice, pan-fried pork ribs drenched in sauce, and (leftover) vegetables. I haven't cooked for him in a while and he seemed to enjoy it, so it was pretty awesome. We ate over a Star Trek movie and that was sweet as well ;D All the dishes turned out fairly well except the pork which got a little tough. I'm baffled by how my mom manages to make her meats so nice, soft, and succulent while mine always comes out tough and chewy :(
Man Gids I'm reading over your menu again and it's making me hungry D:! Time to heat up some leftovers :D

It depends on how your flavoring your meat but if its at all sweet, the easiest way to get softer meat is to throw the more acidic fruits into your marinade. For example, I know for Korean BBQ alot of people add manga, papaya, and even coca cola which works wonders actually. Theres some dishes I know especially for pork such as puerco pibil that do exactly this with orange juice, tequila, lime, etc... in addition to a process of slow cooking over around 6 hours.
Its pretty hard to get non-tough meat when you pan-fry though unless you like pull it off the heat right after its cooked safely through which is kind of risky. Easiest way is just to wrap it in foil and throw it in the oven so none of juices+sauce escape. But then again, I dont know for others but pork is one of those meats I usually like sort of dry as opposed to more tender.

Dude thanks for the tips :D I checked online really quickly and yeah, it seems like slow cooking is the way my mom does it. I'll try the acidic fruits thing too. I definitely prefer pan fry because on the rare occasion that I cook on week days, I'm usually pooped from work and don't want to bother with anything that takes too long to prep. One of these weekends though I'll try making it properly with my slab of fatty pork sitting in the freezer...
Oh yeah I also served up strawberries with chocolate sauce for dessert :D Only, I ended up killing the first half of the chocolate bar in the microwave so my boyfriend had to help pop the second half in a bowl and then putting it in steamer to make into sauce. Yum yum. I think I should treat myself to chocolate (and strawberries!) more often xD

for valentine's a was planning to fill my basement with candles, set up a small table for two, get some sparkling cider (lolz Im too young for wine) and some wine cups and cook penne a la vodka for my girlfriend. Unfortunately, I got too excited and did the whole thing like two weeks before the actual holiday hahaha, Im too impatient. Regardless, it was fun, I almost burned my house down trying to cook for the first time and stepped in candles more than once, but seeing someone, anyone that happy because of something you did, makes it all worth it.
I felt bad not doing anything "special" for valentine's though, so I took her out to eat at this new Thai restaurant in town, it was yummy, and I bought her this cool chocolate filled heart that had a leather jacket on with a zipper and all, inside I put tickets to go see Justice in march.
it was a pretty successful valentine's :3 I found out I can cook...though its best to keep a fire extinguisher around

"cigarettes killed my father and raped my mother"
That's hilarious Ish :) Thai food is awesome!
I'm a recipe editor at a magazine, so I talk about food (and eat it!) all day, and then I come here, and everyone's talking about food! :) Crap has a lot of good points. Acids are going to help tenderize tough cuts of meat, which is why you see recipes for certain cuts including long marinating times. For ribs, slow cooking really is the secret. This is why you'll see a lot of recipes for braised or smoked ribs. Both cooking methods are long and slow, helping to break down the tough tissues of the meat. After that, it can vary depending on which actual type of rib you're cooking. For instance, if you're making short ribs, you want to cook them upwards of 31/2 to 4 hours, and the meat is done when it's literally falling off of the bone. A great website that I reference for recipes all the time is MyRecipes.com. Most of these recipes come from magazines that do actual kitchen testing rather than have on-staff chefs who just write recipes without ever making it, so they're pretty reliable.
Since we're all talking about what we cooked for V-day, I made a banana pudding pie for dessert (HIGHLY recommend it!), and roasted crumb-crust pork loin with brown butter mashed potatoes and honey-glazed carrots :) Yum!
