I feel like there should've been a thread like this already but I guess not xD Anyways, just wanted to start a generic thread to talk about old (or new) movies. I watched There Will Be Blood with my boyfriend this weekend, and I was tremendously underwhelmed. I guess given the rave reviews, Oscar win, and the attention-grabbing title I was expecting something really great and something like Gangs of NY I guess? For a movie with such a flamboyant title we just ended up being awfully bored and I felt like it was a waste of 2.5 hours of my life. The cinematography was nice I guess but the story just didn't go anywhere. And that ending was incredibly irritating! After the movie I perused rotten tomatoes for the heck of it and read through a couple reviewers raving about the evil forces of capitalism vs. religion, etc. which I thought was weak. Blegh. I liked what Roger Ebert wrote though:
"There Will Be Blood" is the kind of film that is easily called great. I am not sure of its greatness. It was filmed in the same area of Texas used by "No Country for Old Men," and that is a great film, and a perfect one. But "There Will Be Blood" is not perfect, and in its imperfections (its unbending characters, its lack of women or any reflection of ordinary society, its ending, its relentlessness) we may see its reach exceeding its grasp.
Anyways curious to see for those of you that saw this movie, what you guys thought. I feel like this is another one of those movies I'm adding to my "overhyped, underwhelmed" list. Particularly because of the hype around certain movies I find underwhelming I always get left wondering if I just completely missed the point. This one though I gotta say I remembered too late a former co-worker begging me to promise never to watch this film, he hated it that much. I just wish I remembered BEFORE we netflixed this one...
I fucking loved that movie. Won't lie. But it was really, awkward, to watch. I think I felt dirty when it was over. :D
Just be glad you netflixed it and didnt waste a theater ticket on it. Im not agreeing the film is bad, but I had a similar experience with another film the other night. Went to go see Repo The Genetic Opera which I had been anticipating greatly though had low hopes for and lo and behold it succeeded to go below what I expected.
If it wasnt for the fact that I was with other people, I would have probably walked out. I can't say I completely hated the film though, anything with Anthony Head is partially win by default, but some aspects of the production were simply laughably bad.
I have to admit, I haven't seen it, for the exact reasons you've espoused, Flyin'. I'm too worried about being underwhelmed.
I just saw Wall-E, and even though I know everyone adored it, I just just thought it was ok. It was a cute movie, but everyone raved so much about it, I was anticipating something more...
I guess expectations really are everything. I think if I wasn't expecting so much from it (and I admit, really had a strong preconception of what I thought the movie might be like going in) I might've enjoyed it more. @ Gid, the movie didn't even really make me feel that bad. Sure I grimaced in spots but I honestly came out of it feeling nothing. I must be becoming crusty and unfeeling in my old age xD
Haha Anya I kinda know how you feel about Wall-E. I enjoyed it, but not as much as some of the other Pixar movies. There was something about the movie that I didn't quite like, but I couldn't exactly put my finger on it. Something about the ending I think... struck me as too idealistic. Which is kind of silly given that it is a kids movie, I don't know what the ending could've been otherwise. I guess it just kind of bothered me that
