so what you guys reading/have recently read that caught your eye?
for me...:
Batman: Dark Victory (Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale)
Blind bought at Barnes since I jsut read the predecessor Long Halloween a bit ago and liked it. I found this pretty much be just as good. Really suspenseful and great illustration by Sale, especially love how he does Poison Ivy.

Peepshow (Joe Matt) - Collections: The Poor Bastard & Spent
Probably my favorite discovery and purchase at Comic-con this summer. Met Joe Matt at the D&Q booth and bought these two collections blindly. Really great stuff, drawing style and similar humor to Joe Sacco I find. Not to mention, he gives some of the best signings ever....

Dade jing (Laozi)
Just read this for a Daoism class I'm taking, plus some commentaries. It is surprisingly a really good read. Easy to follow and definitely can lead to some nice philosophical ponderings....

Also, recently got the Runaways HC collections out, and reread all of it, good shit...

I haven't really been reading much lately, but I just finished the new Murakami novel, After Dark. It was alright, but a bit more watered-down than usual. I also picked up Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman which is a new short-story collection by him. Haven't finished it, but I enjoyed a few of the stories that I've read.

Yea, so I kind of need to find some new authors, the last 5 books I've read were by him. Um... yea.

Id read Harry Potter but I watch the movies instead. Im sure its not as good but im too lazy to read all those now.

Yea I wasnt a big fan of After Dark either, it really seemed like the worst thing Ive read by him by far. I almost regret paying the money to buy it actually. How does Blind Willow Sleeping Woman match up to his other collection, Elephant Vanishes? Although I liked a few stories from it, overall I found his short stories forgetable. I tihnk his writing is really suited for long epic novels like Windup Bird Chronicle. That book....is like my Qu'ran.....

And Na, I read this a while ago but you might want to check it out:
The People Of Paper by Salvador Plascencia
It has stylistic similarities to Murakami in that both authors belong to the genre of magical realism, this one though I find is alot more unique. It does consist of a somewhat conventional narrative structure but it has touches of metafiction and a conflict between both the author Plascencia himself and his own characters. Its somewhat hard to describe but its definitely a work that I think you should check out. Some quick cool things about it though is its usage of text, i.e parts of it are blacked out, run in strange directions and the like.

I'm currently reading the His Dark Materials collection by Philip Pullman. I'm on book 2, after reading book 1 start to finish yesterday. Quite good so far, though I don't want to give anything away to those who haven't read. I do recommend it!

I love Mr. Potter and read the 7th book twice :) Equally satisfying both times!

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell: I heard good things about this, but I'm having trouble getting into it.

Need moar recommendations lol. I keep going to Borders, stay stuck in the manga section for about 30 minutes to an hour, wander over to fiction/fantasy/etc. section and stare at the aisles of books, but usually leave empty-handed =_=

Harry Potter 7 is love of course, I really liked His Dark Materials as well XD The ending (third book) was pretty hawesome, definitely should read it before the Golden Compass comes out this winter haha. Actually there seems to be a lot of book movies coming out this winter. My friend was telling me that The Dark Is Rising movie is coming out! Had a little bit of a squeal-fest over that because that was definitely a huge favorite back in the day. I also flipped through Spiderwick Chronicles book 1 in Borders because the trailers made me curious. They were little hardcover books with beautiful illustrations and uneven pages, kinda like Series of Unfortunate Events (which I haven't read). But yeah really tempted. Reminded me a bit of Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book. Now THAT's another book I really need to get my hands on :D

I did pick up Dealing With Dragons by Patricia Wrede prior to weekend trek to NYC as light bus reading. It's a bit of a nostalgic read because I picked up the third book in the series in middle/high. Still enjoyable :]

For non-fiction I DO really want to check out Freakonomics. I just wish that Borders near my office would freaking stock the paperback version instead of the hardcover. May have to amazon that one... -_-;; I also finished The Tipping Point and Blink a little while back. Malcolm Gladwell = new hero. I never really thought I'd get into non-fiction as fun reading... but I gotta say those were really fascinating reads.

Golden Compass defintely looks interesting as a movie. Like HP, I probably will just stick to watching them as opposed to actually reading.....

Swordfish, I haven't heard of any of those, so I can't recommend from that list. But I can recommend The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger. I found this at B&N the year it came out (to little fanfare that I observed), but it's just fabulous in so many ways. One of my favs.

Another I can recommend is The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (a memoir), and anything by Jhumpa Lahiri (The Namesake, Interpreter of Maladies).

Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan
Just read this finally and its pretty safe to say, it completely blew me away. Not that I needed convincing that Vaughan is one of the most talented current comic book writers with Y:The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina, but this definitely takes things to a completely different level. Seriously, I would definitely recommend everyone to give this title a read. Probably one of the more unique anti-war stories I've read, and most definitely one of the strongest as well.
For a quick summary of the novel, it is basically a fictional retelling of a real life event where lions escaped from a Zoo in Baghdad in the aftermath of the US takeover. If your familiar with this event, then you probably already know the tone and conclusion of the novel, but if you aren't I highly suggest not reading up on the event before the novel if possible.

I just finished the Kite Runner.

Awesome book. Made me super depressed and I now firmly believe that the world is an awful place and there's nothing anyone can do to fix it... ;-;

And now having gotten to the ending I can say, I have low expectations now for the film too because I can totally see them Hollywoodizing it up, especially the ending.... =__=

Ok now I need to go read or watch something with a lot of furry lambs and smiling babies or something along those lines =_=

I read it quite a while ago, but I remember it being more uplifting and hopeful then depressing. Sure alot of shitty stuff happens, but it ended with a great sense of hope in my mind

Not that the film has any impressive talent behind it, I'm actually more concerned with the potential effect it could have on the child actors, whom were supposedly underpaid and taken advantage of. Also, theres the bigger issue of the "rape" which can have very serious effects on them in their native country which the creators had no concern for.

Just got a signed copy of Warren Ellis's "Crooked Little Vein", so far its very characteristically Ellis's writing but not too far into it to comment on actual plot material. So far though, its definitely reminiscent of Transmetropolitan which is always a plus...

I didn't think they'd get explicit enough with those parts for child actors to really get taken advantage of? Jesus who's doing this film?

I don't know if it ended with a great sense of hope. It ended with a tiny little bit of hope maybe -___- I think I was a lot happier about 30 pages before the actual ending. I think it's expectations really, I just expected a really great happy ending and I don't know why I thought that given that the first part of the book clearly indicated that it wasn't that kind of book. I guess just out of all the feelings of disgust and bad things when finally it seemed like something good would happen, I built it up in my mind and then when my hopes got dashed I was kinda like... urgh... awfulness... *headdesk*
