I'd read His Dark Materials a while back, but I had only bought the first book. I bought the Subtle Knife a couple weeks ago, and yesterday I took advantage of my Borders' Reward coupon (and the fact that the store FINALLY stocked up!) and bought the Amber Spyglass. I adore Philip Pullman.

I think one of the reasons why the store finally stocked up was because the movie for the Golden Compass was coming out. I'd see a few trailers here and there, the more I thought about the upcoming movie the more excited I am. At first I wasn't too sure about Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig as Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel, mostly because my mental image of those characters were different. But then the more I thought about it the more I realized how well-cast it is, I can totally see Nicole Kidman pulling off the beauty, seduction, utter deceitfulness of the character, and Daniel Craig posess a lot of the iron "machismo" vibe I associate with Lord Asriel. And I love Eva Green as Serafina Pekkala, she comes really close to what I imagine Serafina to look like :D

So I just googled up the trailer -
It looks stunning, beautiful effects and from what they showed, looks like they stayed close to the original storyline, which makes me happy. Also quickly went over wiki... apparently Pullman suggested Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter XD That's pretty awesome. Can't say I'm too thrilled about the idea of them cutting out the final three chapters and moving them to the second movie, but it was done in LOTR and I didn't mind it. My copy of the first book is at home but I guess it'll be a bit more of a cliffhanger ending... ._. Lastly meh at the controversy. The first book really didn't tackle too many of the religious issues that the second and third book did, but if they end up making movies 2 and 3 I really, really hope they don't water it down too much because the controversial bits was what made the series really special for me...

Wiki -

Anyhoo, December 7 - definitely going to go watch this one :D

I LOVE the books, too, and can't wait for the movie. I was really pleased with the casting, and the trailer does make it look really well done. I don't see how they could cut too much of the religion out of it without really deviating from the entire plot of the overall story. I don't want to spoil things for those who haven't read it and may plan to. Pullman had religious critique in mind all along from what I read in an interview, though he was firm that ultimately the books are about Lyra. I'd be surprised if Pullman let them deviate that much in the long run.

Well, I'm interested to see what those who've read it and those who haven't will think. Since I read them, I of course viewed it in a completely different way as someone who hasn't. So...we'll see!

XO! SNEAK PREVIEW! THAT'S SO HAWESOME! *drools with envy*

I'm so going to watch it this weekend with my boyfriend, even if it's going to be freezing cold outside :D

BTW... prequel!??! Really?? Out of curiosity did you read Lyra's Oxford? I saw it in Borders, didn't get a chance to flip through it but the thin-ness of it actually turned me off a little bit haha xD;

According to what I've heard, Lyra's Oxford was a short story that was going to be in this forthcoming prequel, The Book of Dust, but Pullman decided to cut it and publish it separately. I've got a first edition that I snagged for ridiculously cheap off Ebay a while ago (along with signed first editions of the three books! XD Some kid in Indiana had no idea what he had his hands on :D ) but I haven't gotten to read it yet.

Ok, spoilers below, so please don't read if you're going to see the movie and don't want me to taint you! XD

Spoiler below!
The movie had a treasure trove of information to work from. I had been wondering how they were going to convey the subtleties that I enjoyed so much in the book on film because I felt like they were nuances that would be hard to portray. In my opinion, in more instances than not, this proved true. Now, I'm a skeptic when it comes to translating lit. to film. In most instances, I feel like the genres cross over with little positive outcome, though there are some examples otherwise.

Here are the things I enjoyed: The visuals were wonderful, albeit Lyra's world was quite a bit more tech-savvy than I had imagined while reading. I thought that the animation of the daemons and polar bears turned out great, and I enjoyed the little touches they added to the daemons. I loved the casting, and thought that Dakota Blue Richards did a great job portraying Lyra's rebellious spirit, Nicole Kidman was wonderful, and Daniel Craig was as well, though he didn't get nearly enough screen time. I honestly don't remember much of the soundtrack, which either means that it wasn't distracting me, a good thing, or that it wasn't memorable. I'm planning to listen to it online later and decide what I think of it.

Here are the things I did not enjoy: The film was incredibly rushed. It was short, clocking in just at 2 hours by my watch, and it could have used a good 30 more minutes of pacing and development scenes added in. This may be a point that someone who hasn't read the books would disagree with; maybe the pacing would be wonderfully quick-paced and lack any unnecessary dawdling to a nonreader? But to me, there were so many key points in the books, moments that stood out to me as important (one early moment that comes to mind and would have offered wonderful foreshadowing is a conversation early on in Book 1 about Lyra's prophesied betrayal) that weren't even mentioned. Add to the 150 mph pacing the fact that the actual plotting of the action of the book was altered (for what reason, I still haven't figured out, as I can think of nothing positive that it added), and I feel like the character's actions in the movie were made to be illogical. And, my final verdict on ending the movie early and leaving the final three chapters to Movie #2: shouldn't have done it. The movie ends on a positive note, but also doesn't make you at all excited about what's to come. Not enough time has been spent developing the weight of the battle to come, the enormity of the conflicts Lyra is racing into, nor the moral ambiguity you're left with at the end of Book 1 regarding Lyra's father. According to reports I've read, New Line chose to do this despite director Chris Weisz' urge to keep true to the book, in order to foster a more positive ending, produce a more financially profitable film, and thus stay truer to the remaining two books. We'll see.

All in all, a good film, a much better read.

Wholeheartedly agreed on most of your points. I watched the movie on Saturday and enjoyed it from a "I loved the books, this stayed fairly true to the original plot and is pure eye-candy for me" kind of perspective, but my boyfriend who have never read the books was underwhelmed and not very impressed. He thought it was a so-so movie in terms of plot, child acting (disagreed with him there), and he also totally missed the religious implications of dust and the Church despite being on the watch for it. Afterwards I was roughly explaining what dust and the Magisterium were suppose to signify, and he totally didn't get that at all. They really did wash most of that out of this film which really makes me wonder what they're going to do with Film 2 and 3. And of course if you don't get Pullman's critique, there's nothing special about this series that would make it stand out from other fantasy series D:

My biggest complaint definitely would be where the ending cut off. I definitely think they should've stuck to the book's ending because
Spoiler below!
having Roger's death scene definitely would create a bigger and better cliffhanger type ending, and more anticipation for the next movie, because as is the movie more or less ended on a rather ho-hum point.
I was ambivalent on some of the daemons' animation (Pan didn't really shape-shift as much as he did in the book haha, although I can see that coming down to CG constraints). I think my bf would agree with you about rushed pacing/lack of plot development, because I don't think he really got particularly interested or attached to any characters (as you would if the plot development WAS done well). I'm curious to see how this movie did opening weekend 'cause we were expecting the theater to be packed, but it was only about... 70% full on Saturday afternoon? Again this was enjoyable eye candy for me, but I say "Hear Hear" to your "good film, a much better read" comment ; D;

Numbers according to a quick article on Yahoo.com: $26 million (#1 spot) USA. Abroad: $55 million.

I hope it does well; I'd really like to see all three get made!
Spoiler below!
Just imagine getting to see the fight among the angels and witches and everything at the end of the third book!! It'd all be worth it to see that.

Haha I was reading the NYTimes coverage of this weekend's box office... it got #1, but it didn't do as well as New Line hoped. Kinda confirmed my feeling when we sat in the 70% full theater last Saturday afternoon. So now apparently the sequel / New Line / a lot of other things are "in jeopardy." I would want to see the sequels too... book three was definitely my favorite for the finale Dx But... yeah, unless it picks up steam... I dunno :[

P.S. Was reading a good review article on Golden Compass movie + His Dark Materials series, along with interview tidbits from Philip Pullman that I want to share here. It's chock-full of spoilers though, not just for the first movie but for books 2 and 3 so don't click if you don't want to be spoiled. You have been warned :]
